A PET-CT scan (Positron Emission Tomography–Computed Tomography) is an advanced imaging technique used in modern oncology. By combining information about metabolic activity with detailed anatomical imaging, a PET-CT scan Bangalore, can help oncologists understand the location and extent of disease, assess whether cancer has spread, plan treatment, and evaluate response to therapy.
If you or a loved one is searching for a trusted cancer diagnostic center in South Bangalore, this comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know about PET-CT scans—including preparation, fasting requirements, diabetes-related considerations, costs, the scanning procedure, and result interpretation.
Understanding PET-CT Scans: What Makes Them Important in Oncology?
A PET-CT scan combines two sophisticated imaging technologies into a single examination:
PET Component: Uses a small amount of a radioactive tracer, most commonly Fluorodeoxyglucose (F-18 FDG), a glucose analogue that helps identify areas of increased metabolic activity. Many cancer cells use glucose at a higher rate than some normal tissues.
CT Component: Produces detailed cross-sectional X-ray images that show the anatomical location and structure of areas demonstrating increased metabolic activity.
By combining these two types of information, PET-CT can provide a more comprehensive picture that may assist doctors in cancer staging, treatment planning, and monitoring.
PET CT Scan vs. CT Scan vs. MRI for Cancer: Understanding the Differences
Patients frequently ask why a PET-CT scan may be recommended if they have already undergone a CT or MRI scan. Each imaging modality provides different types of information and may be used for different clinical purposes.
| Feature / Modality | PET-CT Scan | CT Scan (Computed Tomography) | MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary Purpose | Evaluates metabolic activity along with anatomical structures | Provides detailed anatomical and structural imaging | Provides high-contrast soft-tissue imaging |
| Cancer Detection | Helps identify areas of abnormal metabolic activity and assess cancer involvement | Shows tumour size, shape, location, and structural characteristics | Particularly useful for detailed imaging of the brain, spine, pelvis, joints, and other soft tissues |
| Whole Body Capability | Useful for whole-body cancer staging when clinically indicated | Usually focused on specific body regions | Generally focused on specific regions; whole-body MRI requires specialised protocols |
| Key Advantage | Combines metabolic and anatomical information in one examination | Fast, high-resolution anatomical imaging | Excellent soft-tissue contrast without ionising radiation |
The choice between PET-CT, CT, MRI, or a combination of imaging techniques depends on the type of cancer, clinical question, treatment stage, and the treating doctor's recommendation.
Why PET-CT Scans Are Important for Cancer Staging & Management
A whole body PET CT scan in Bangalore can play an important role at different stages of cancer care:
Initial Cancer Staging: Helps determine whether a tumour is localised or has spread to lymph nodes, bones, or distant organs, supporting accurate staging.
Treatment Planning: Provides information that can help radiation oncologists and other specialists determine appropriate treatment strategies.
Evaluating Therapy Response: Can help assess changes in metabolic activity during or after treatments such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or other systemic therapies.
Detecting Recurrence: May help differentiate between treatment-related changes and areas of active disease when interpreted alongside clinical history and other imaging findings.
PET-CT findings are interpreted by specialists in the context of the patient's symptoms, diagnosis, previous imaging, laboratory results, and treatment history.
How to Prepare for a PET-CT Scan: Step-by-Step Guidelines
Proper preparation is important for obtaining reliable PET-CT results. Because FDG is a glucose-based tracer, blood glucose levels, food intake, physical activity, and other factors can influence tracer uptake.
PET CT Scan Fasting Rules & Dietary Restrictions
Common preparation instructions for an FDG PET-CT may include:
Fasting: Patients are generally asked to avoid solid food for several hours before the scan, commonly at least 4–6 hours. The exact fasting duration should be confirmed with the imaging centre.
Hydration is Key: Plain, unflavoured water is generally permitted and encouraged unless your doctor has advised otherwise. Adequate hydration can support tracer distribution and elimination.
Dietary Preparation: A low-carbohydrate, low-sugar diet may be recommended during the period before an FDG PET-CT, depending on the centre's protocol. Patients may be advised to avoid foods and beverages that can significantly increase blood glucose levels.
Avoid Strenuous Exercise: Heavy exercise, gym workouts, and strenuous physical activity may need to be avoided before the scan because muscle activity can affect FDG uptake.
Always confirm the exact fasting and dietary instructions with the PET-CT centre before your appointment.
How to Prepare for a PET Scan with Diabetes
Managing blood glucose levels is particularly important for diabetic patients undergoing an FDG PET-CT. Elevated blood glucose can affect FDG distribution and may reduce the diagnostic quality of the scan.
Diabetic patients should inform the PET-CT centre about their diabetes, medications, insulin use, and usual meal schedule before the appointment.
Blood Sugar Management: Blood glucose should be within the range recommended by the nuclear medicine team before the scan. The centre may check your blood glucose on arrival.
Oral Diabetes Medications: Do not change or stop diabetes medications unless specifically instructed by your doctor or the nuclear medicine team.
Insulin Management: Insulin timing may need to be coordinated with the scan appointment because insulin and food intake can influence glucose metabolism and FDG uptake. Patients should follow the individualised instructions provided by the clinical team.
Individualised Preparation: Diabetes management can differ from patient to patient. Therefore, medication, insulin, fasting, and appointment timing should be discussed with the nuclear medicine team in advance.
The PET-CT Scan Procedure: What to Expect On Scan Day
Knowing what happens during your appointment can help reduce anxiety and make the process easier to understand. At ARC Cancer Hospital, the PET-CT process generally includes the following steps:
Patient Registration & Glucose Check: After registration, the medical team may check your blood glucose level to determine whether it is appropriate to proceed with the scan.
Radiotracer Administration: A small amount of FDG radiotracer is administered intravenously through a small IV line.
Rest Period: You will rest quietly for approximately 45–60 minutes while the tracer is distributed through the body. Physical activity and unnecessary movement should be minimised during this period.
The PET-CT Scan: You will lie comfortably on the scanner bed, which moves through the scanner. The actual imaging portion commonly takes approximately 15–25 minutes, although the duration can vary.
Post-Scan Care: Unless you have been given specific instructions otherwise, you can generally return to your normal routine after the scan. Drinking adequate water may help with elimination of the tracer.
The complete appointment may take approximately 2–2.5 hours, depending on preparation, tracer uptake, imaging, and departmental procedures.
Understanding Your PET-CT Scan Results & SUV Values
Your PET-CT report may include quantitative measurements known as SUV (Standardized Uptake Value).
What is SUV? SUV provides an estimate of the concentration of radiotracer uptake in a particular area relative to the injected dose and other patient-specific factors.
High SUV (Hypermetabolic): Increased FDG uptake can indicate increased metabolic activity. It may be associated with malignant disease, but infection, inflammation, and certain benign conditions can also demonstrate increased uptake.
Low SUV (Hypometabolic): Lower FDG uptake may be seen in normal tissues or certain benign or treated areas. However, SUV values vary according to tissue type, tumour type, treatment status, and other factors.
Clinical Note: SUV values should never be interpreted in isolation. A high or low SUV does not by itself confirm or exclude cancer. A qualified nuclear medicine specialist and the treating oncologist should interpret PET-CT findings in the context of the patient's clinical history, other imaging findings, and treatment status.
PET CT Scan Cost in Bangalore: What Factors Influence Pricing?
The PET CT scan cost in Bangalore can vary depending on several factors, including the type of radiotracer, scan protocol, clinical indication, and diagnostic facility. FDG PET-CT scans may commonly fall within the ₹15,000–₹30,000 range, but actual charges can vary. Patients should confirm the current cost and inclusions with the diagnostic centre before scheduling the scan.
Key factors that can influence the overall cost include:
Type of Radiotracer: Standard F-18 FDG scans are widely used, while specialised scans such as PSMA PET for prostate cancer or DOTA-TATE PET for neuroendocrine tumours may involve different protocols and costs.
Scope of Scan: A whole body PET CT scan may cover the required body regions according to the clinical protocol, while specialised brain, cardiac, or other PET examinations may follow different protocols.
Diagnostic Centre Expertise: The availability of advanced imaging equipment, experienced nuclear medicine specialists, and multidisciplinary oncology support can influence the overall patient experience and service offering.
