10 Early Warning Signs of Cancer You Should Never Ignore in Bangalore
Introduction: Listen to What Your Body Is Telling You
Our bodies constantly give us signals when something changes.
A persistent cough may seem like a result of pollution. Unexplained fatigue may be blamed on long working hours. Changes in digestion may be dismissed as stress or an irregular diet. A new lump may be assumed to be harmless.
In many cases, these symptoms do have causes other than cancer. However, persistent, unexplained or unusual changes should not be ignored.
Recognising potential warning signs and seeking medical advice promptly can help identify the underlying cause and, when cancer is present, enable earlier diagnosis and treatment. Early diagnosis is an important part of cancer care because cancers detected at an earlier stage are often more responsive to treatment.
At ARC Cancer Hospital, Bangalore, our focus is to help patients understand their symptoms, assess their individual risk and access appropriate diagnostic and cancer care without unnecessary delay.
10 Early Warning Signs of Cancer
It is important to remember that having one of these symptoms does not mean you have cancer. Many common conditions can cause similar symptoms.
However, if a change is persistent, unexplained, worsening or unusual for you, it deserves medical attention.
1. Unexplained Weight Loss
Losing weight without deliberately changing your diet or exercise routine can have many causes. However, significant and unexplained weight loss can sometimes be associated with cancers of the digestive system, lung and other organs.
If you are losing weight without a clear explanation particularly when it is accompanied by loss of appetite, persistent fatigue, digestive problems or other unusual symptoms consult a doctor.
2. A Persistent Cough or Hoarseness
A cough is common and is often caused by infections, allergies, asthma or environmental irritation.
However, a cough or hoarseness that does not go away, particularly when accompanied by breathlessness, chest discomfort or blood in the sputum, should be evaluated.
Persistent respiratory symptoms may have several possible causes, but a medical assessment can help identify the underlying problem and determine whether further investigation is necessary.
3. Blood in the Stool or Changes in Bowel Habits
Blood in the stool should not automatically be assumed to be piles or another minor digestive problem.
Persistent changes such as constipation or diarrhoea, a change in the appearance of stools, a feeling of incomplete bowel emptying, or unexplained bleeding should be discussed with a doctor.
Although these symptoms can result from conditions other than cancer, they can also occur with colorectal cancer and therefore warrant appropriate evaluation.
4. A Mouth Ulcer That Does Not Heal
Most mouth ulcers heal on their own.
However, a sore, ulcer, red or white patch in the mouth that does not heal, particularly when associated with persistent pain, difficulty swallowing or changes in the mouth, should be examined by a healthcare professional.
This is especially important for people who use tobacco, smoke or have other recognised risk factors for oral cancer.
Early assessment of persistent oral changes can help identify potentially serious conditions at an earlier stage.
5. A New or Unexplained Lump
A new lump or area of thickening in the breast, neck, armpit, groin or another part of the body should be checked by a doctor.
Many lumps are benign and may be caused by infections, cysts or other non-cancerous conditions. However, a new or changing lump should not be self-diagnosed.
Breast changes such as a new lump, skin changes or nipple changes deserve particular attention and appropriate clinical evaluation.
6. Unusual Bleeding or Discharge
Unexpected bleeding can have several causes, but unexplained or abnormal bleeding should always be evaluated.
Examples include:
- Blood in the urine
- Blood in the stool
- Unusual vaginal bleeding, including bleeding after menopause
- Unexplained bleeding between periods
- Unusual nipple discharge
- Other unexplained bleeding or discharge
The cause may be benign, but certain forms of abnormal bleeding can also be associated with cancer. Seeking medical advice early can help establish the cause.
7. Persistent or Unexplained Fatigue
Everyone experiences tiredness.
But persistent fatigue that does not improve with adequate rest, particularly when it is accompanied by weight loss, changes in appetite, breathlessness or other unexplained symptoms, should not simply be attributed to a busy lifestyle.
Fatigue can result from many conditions, including anaemia, thyroid problems, infections, sleep disorders and other medical conditions. In some cases, it can also occur with cancer. A medical evaluation can help identify the underlying cause.
8. Changes in a Mole or Skin Lesion
Pay attention to new or changing moles and skin lesions.
Changes in:
- A – Asymmetry: One half looks different from the other
- B – Border: The edges become irregular or uneven
- C – Colour: The colour changes or becomes uneven
- D – Diameter: The lesion becomes larger
- E – Evolving: The mole changes in size, shape, colour or appearance
A changing mole does not necessarily indicate cancer, but it should be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional.
9. Persistent Indigestion, Difficulty Swallowing or Abdominal Changes
Occasional acidity, bloating or indigestion is common.
However, persistent digestive symptoms particularly difficulty swallowing, ongoing indigestion, persistent abdominal discomfort, unexplained bloating, early fullness or changes in appetite should be discussed with a doctor.
These symptoms can arise from several gastrointestinal conditions, but persistent or worsening symptoms may require further evaluation.
10. Persistent, Unexplained Pain
Pain is one of the most common reasons people seek medical attention, and most pain is not caused by cancer.
However, new pain that persists, progressively worsens or has no obvious explanation deserves evaluation.
Depending on its location and associated symptoms, persistent pain may require investigation to determine whether it is related to a musculoskeletal condition, infection, inflammation or another underlying problem.
Do not wait for severe pain before seeking medical advice. Some cancers may not cause significant pain in their early stages.
When Should You See a Cancer Specialist?
You do not need to panic every time you experience one of these symptoms.
However, you should not ignore symptoms that are:
- Persistent or getting worse
- Unexplained
- Unusual for you
- Associated with unexplained weight loss or fatigue
- Accompanied by bleeding
- Associated with a new lump or swelling
- Not improving despite appropriate treatment
A general physician may be the right first point of contact for many symptoms. Depending on the clinical findings, you may then be referred to an appropriate specialist, including an oncologist.
The goal is not to assume that a symptom is cancer. The goal is to find out what is causing it without unnecessary delay.
Early Diagnosis and Cancer Screening: What's the Difference?
These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same.
Early Diagnosis
Early diagnosis involves evaluating people who already have symptoms or signs that could indicate cancer.
The objective is to identify the disease as early as possible and move efficiently from evaluation to diagnosis and, when necessary, treatment.
Cancer Screening
Screening is different. It involves testing people who do not have symptoms to look for certain cancers or precancerous changes.
Screening is recommended for specific cancers and specific groups based on factors such as age, sex, personal history and individual risk. It is not appropriate to perform every possible cancer test on everyone.
This is why cancer screening should ideally be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional who can assess your individual risk and recommend appropriate tests.
Who May Need Earlier or More Targeted Screening?
Your screening needs may be different if you have certain risk factors, including:
Family History
A strong family history of particular cancers may increase your risk and may sometimes warrant earlier or more specialised assessment.
Tobacco and Alcohol Exposure
Smoking and tobacco use are established risk factors for several cancers. Reducing or eliminating tobacco exposure is one of the most important steps you can take to reduce cancer risk.
Previous Cancer or Precancerous Conditions
People who have previously had cancer or certain precancerous conditions may require specific follow-up and surveillance.
Inherited Genetic Risk
Some inherited genetic changes can increase the risk of particular cancers. If several close relatives have had certain cancers, particularly at younger ages, a doctor may recommend genetic counselling or risk assessment.
Occupational or Environmental Exposures
Certain long-term occupational or environmental exposures can increase the risk of specific cancers. Your doctor can help determine whether additional evaluation is appropriate.
What Can You Do to Reduce Your Cancer Risk?
Not every cancer can be prevented, but several lifestyle choices can reduce the risk of cancer and support overall health.
Avoid Tobacco
Do not smoke or use tobacco products. If you currently use tobacco, seek professional support to quit.
Maintain a Healthy Weight
A balanced diet and regular physical activity can help maintain a healthy body weight.
Stay Physically Active
Aim for regular physical activity appropriate for your age and health condition.
Eat a Balanced Diet
Include a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, pulses and other nutritious foods, while limiting highly processed foods.
Limit Alcohol
Alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of several cancers. Limiting or avoiding alcohol can reduce this risk.
Stay Up to Date With Recommended Vaccinations
Vaccination against infections such as HPV and hepatitis B can help prevent certain cancers associated with these infections.
Follow Appropriate Screening Recommendations
Screening should be based on evidence, age, personal and family history, and individual risk rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Do these symptoms always mean cancer?
No. Most of these symptoms can be caused by conditions other than cancer. However, persistent, unexplained or worsening symptoms should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.
2. How long should I wait before seeing a doctor?
There is no single waiting period that applies to every symptom. If a symptom is persistent, worsening, unusual for you or accompanied by other concerning changes, it is better to seek medical advice rather than waiting for it to become severe.
3. Can cancer be present without symptoms?
Yes. Some cancers may not cause noticeable symptoms in their early stages. This is one reason evidence-based screening is recommended for certain cancers and risk groups.
4. Is cancer screening the same as a full-body cancer checkup?
Not necessarily. Screening is designed to detect specific cancers or precancerous changes in people without symptoms and is recommended according to evidence and individual risk. A healthcare professional can advise which screening tests, if any, are appropriate for you.
5. Does a family history of cancer mean I will develop cancer?
No. A family history may increase the risk of certain cancers, but it does not mean that you will necessarily develop cancer. Depending on the pattern of cancers in your family, your doctor may recommend risk assessment, genetic counselling or earlier surveillance.
6. Should I wait until I have pain before seeing a doctor?
No. Some cancers may cause little or no pain, particularly in their early stages. Persistent or unusual symptoms should be evaluated even if they are not painful.
7. What happens if a screening test shows an abnormality?
An abnormal screening result does not automatically mean you have cancer. Further diagnostic evaluation may be required to understand what the abnormality means. Your doctor will guide you through the appropriate next steps.
8. Where can I seek cancer evaluation in Bangalore?
ARC Cancer Hospital provides oncology consultation, diagnostic evaluation and comprehensive cancer care in Bangalore. The appropriate investigations and treatment plan will depend on your symptoms, medical history and individual risk factors.
